iPhone 12 Pro Max Problems & Issues: All You Need to Know.

There are more and more problems plaguing the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max as we push into the new year.

While Apple’s iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max have earned excellent reviews and are amongst the best phones you can now buy, they’re far from perfect.

iPhone 12 users are complaining about a wide variety of issues though we haven’t heard about any widespread “gate” issues as in past years.

Keep in mind Apple’s iPhone 12 models are only a few months old and while some of these issues may be resolved by Apple and its partners, we will likely see more problems will popup as people put more wear and tear on their devices.

The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max face similar problems as they share many parts, were released at the same time, and are the first iPhones to launch with 5G networks in mind.

In the below guide, you can learn about the current state of iPhone 12 issues, potential fixes for these problems,  places to find feedback, and what’s next for these devices.

iPhone 12 Pro Max Problems

The Most Common iPhone 12 Pro Max Problems and Issues

  • iPhone 12 Activation Problems.
  • iPhone 12 Display Has Green Tint or Flickers.
  • iPhone 12 Disconnects from Cellular Networks.
  • iPhone 12 Doesn’t Connect to 5G Networks.
  • iPhone 12 5G Speed Isn’t as Fast as Expected.

Activation issues always plague new iPhones so it could as no surprise to learn that some owners have been dealing with them.

If you’re having issues activating your phone, check Apple’s System Status page. If you don’t see a green symbol next to iOS Device Activation, you’ll want to wait until it’s green and then try activating the phone again.

If it’s green and the process still isn’t working, make sure you have a SIM card inserted in your iPhone. If you’re receiving a “No Sim” or “Invalid SIM” error, you’ll want to head to this guide for assistance.

We’re also hearing about Face ID problems, issues with first and third-party applications, Exchange problems, iCloud issues, visual voicemail problems, SIM card issues, Bluetooth issues, issues with the screen, design problems, charging problems, Wi-Fi issues, sound problems, and excessive battery drain while devices are in standby mode.

There is some chatter about display issues. Some iPhone 12 models are exhibiting a greenish tint and other users are dealing with flickering screens. We’ve encountered this issue on one of our iPhone 12 Pro models.

Fortunately, Apple is aware of the issues and is currently investigating how to resolve them. iPhone 11 users were seeing similar issues and Apple was able to fix them with its iOS 13.6.1 update. That bodes well for iPhone 12 users, who will likely get a similar fix in a future iOS 14 update.

Several iOS 14.5 beta users are saying the latest version of the iOS 14.5 beta has fixed the green tint issue on their iPhone 12. The official version of iOS 14.5 will be out in the spring.

Owners of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12, both of which employ a design with aluminum edges, are reportedly seeing discoloration on the chassis.

A report from Svetapple states that the color is fading on parts of the edges. It’s unclear how widespread this issue is, but it’s a bit surprising given how new these devices are. It’s an issue we’ll be keeping an eye on as we push deeper into the year.

On top of that, iPhone 12 users are complaining about 5G/LTE issues. Some users are saying cellular service is dropping unexpectedly while on the go. Others are complaining that they aren’t seeing the 5G speeds they expected.

It’s important to note that 5G is a relatively new technology and coverage can be inconsistent. Some of the frustrations with slow 5G performance should resolve over time as carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile build out their 5G networks.

We’ve also seen numerous complaints about a stutter when iPhone 12 Pro owners close their various applications. The issue has been ongoing since the launch.

Some users are saying the iOS 14.5 beta has resolved the issue so we could see a fix in the official version of the software.

Where to Find Feedback About iPhone 12 Performance

If you’re thinking about buying an iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max, or if you already own one, you’ll want to monitor feedback from those who have adopted these devices. This feedback will alert you to potential issues with the hardware and software.

We recommend keeping an eye on YouTube, Apple’s discussion forums, social media sites like Twitter, and sites like the MacRumors forums for ongoing feedback about the flagship phones.

We’ve also put together a list of the best reasons to, and not to, install the latest version of iOS 14 and it’s worth a look if you’re on the fence about Apple’s newest software.

If you can’t find a fix for your issue(s) in our guides, you’ll want to check Apple’s discussion forums and see if someone has a fix for your problem(s).

If you can’t find anything there, it’s time to get in touch with Apple. You can do so via the company’s support account on Twitter. You can also get in contact with Apple Support via the company’s website.

If you’d rather explain your issue in person, you should take your new phone into your local Apple Store and see if they can diagnose your problem. If you’ve got an Apple Store in your area, you’ll want to schedule a Genius Bar appointment.

Your iPhone 12 is currently under warranty so they might offer you a replacement if the problem is serious enough.

How to Downgrade the iPhone 12’s Software

If you’re dealing with software problems on your iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max, you can try downgrading to the previous version of iOS 14 if the option is available.

If you’re unfamiliar with the downgrade process our iOS downgrade guide will walk you through everything you need to know before you make the move.

What’s Next for the iPhone 12

If your device is struggling on iOS 14.4.2, or an older version of iOS 14, you might be on your own for a few more days.

Apple’s confirmed a new iOS 14.5 update and the software is currently in beta testing ahead of its official release later on this year. The company says the official release will come in early spring. At this point, you can expect a release in April.

iOS 14.5 is a milestone upgrade which means it will carry new features, bug fixes, and security updates. We expect a fairly long list of changes.

If you can’t wait for the official version of iOS 14.5 to arrive, you can download the pre-release version of the firmware onto your iPhone right now.

Install iOS 14.4.2 for Better Security

If security is important to you, think about installing iOS 14.4.2 right now.

iOS 14.4.2 has an important security patch on board and you can read more about the change over on Apple's website.

If you missed iOS 14.4.1, you get its patch with your upgrade to iOS 14.4.2. You can read about that patch right here.

If you skipped iOS 14.4, you get the update's patches with your upgrade. You can learn more about iOS 14.4's security patches right here.

If you skipped iOS 14.3 you'll get its nine security updates with your upgrade. You can read more about them on its security site.

iOS 14.3 also included a new privacy information section on App Store pages that includes a developer-reported summary of the app’s privacy practices.

If you skipped iOS 14.2, your iOS 14.4.2 update includes 24 additional security patches. You can learn more about the patches on Apple's security website.

If you're still running iOS 13, iOS 14.4.2 includes iOS 14.0's security updates.

iOS 14.0 brought 11 new security patches to the iPhone. If you're interested in the exact nature of these improvements, you can read about them over on Apple's website.

In addition to those patches, iOS 14 comes with some security and privacy upgrades including improvements to Home/HomeKit and Safari.

For instance in Safari, you can now tap the Privacy Report button to better understand how websites handle your privacy.

With iOS 14 on board you can now get information on the App Store that will help you understand the privacy practices of apps before you download them.

There is also a new recording indicator that will appear at the top of your screen whenever an app is using your microphone or camera. You can see if an app has used them recently in Control Center.

Researchers also discovered that Apple brought a new "BlastDoor" sandbox security system to iOS 14. The system is meant to prevent attacks from occurring via the Messages app.

iPhone 12 still plagued by weird display issues

Over the past few weeks, a number of readers have been getting in touch to highlight an issue with the iPhone 12. It's a display issue that's been plaguing users since the handset was released, and one that Apple seems unable to fix.

The problem is weird -- black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes, and black pixels turning off after few seconds in static scenes when the iPhone is in low light conditions, causing a weird, ghostly intermittent glow.

There's an extensive 82-page thread over on Apple's support forum about this, a thread that was started back in early November 2020.

It's a long, detailed forum, where some iPhone 12 owners have had numerous handset replacements to try to fix the issue. Others are being told by service centers that it is a software issue and they need to wait for an update to fix it.

I was told mid-November that Apple was "aware" of the issue and "investigating," but since then things have gone quiet.

It's February of 2021, the iPhone 12 has been out for months, and neither the release of iOS 14.4 nor the iOS 14.5 developer preview seems to fix this problem.

Here's a video that shows the problem in action, captured by the user who kicked off the support thread.

I've seen a number of possible fixes for this problem suggested, from resetting the light sensor (go to Settings > Display & Brightness, set to Automatic, and then, while you are shining a bright flashlight onto the light sensor that's at the top of the display by the earpiece, turn off the Automatic setting), or switching off True Tone (which you can find in Settings > Display & Brightness).

Others have had temporary relief from this issue by fiddling with the color tint of the display (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size then tap on Color Filters and from there tweak the display).

The bottom line, though, is that these are all temporary fixes, users shouldn't need to fiddle with settings to get the display working right, and Apple needs to fix the problem.
